Man sets fire to Congressman’s district office over Tik Tok ban: Police

The popular social media app TikTok briefly went dark in the United States after a man set fire to a congressional district office, police in Wisconsin are investigating.

According to the Fond du Lac Police Department, a 19-year-old Menasha man has confessed to setting a fire in office space rented to U.S. Rep. Glenn Groman.

Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, police along with the City of Fond du Lac Fire Department responded to Grotman’s office for a structure fire, police said.

Officers located the suspected arsonist near the Store Mall shortly after putting out the fire.

Police said the man admitted to police that he had set the fire “in response to recent talk of banning Tik Tok.”

Grotman chose a routing or “blocking” account for Tik Tok.

Grotman took to X to respond to the arson attack.

“No one was injured in the fire and the damage is under control,” he wrote. “Thank you to the FDL firefighters and police officers for their quick response.”

“We are relieved that no one was injured during the fire and the office was unoccupied. Violent acts of any kind will not be tolerated, and we are committed to the safety and security of our community,” he said. Fond du Luc Police Chief Aaron Goldstein said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Thank you for the quick response of our officers who helped put out the fire and locate the suspect.”

Officials said the suspect is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail and an arson case is headed to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office.

Fox News Digital has contacted TikTok for comment on the fire attack.

The popular Chinese-owned social media platform was shut down on Saturday after the Supreme Court upheld a law barring the application from being sold in the US.

US users said they were able to regain access to the app following Saturday’s outage, and a new message praising Trump appeared for users on Sunday afternoon.

“Welcome!” Tik Tok message read. “Thank you for your patience and support. Thanks to President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the US!”

Earlier on Sunday, Trump tweeted on TRUTH Social, “Companies are asking TikTok not to go dark!”

“On Monday, I will issue an executive order to extend the time before the bans go into effect, so we can make a deal to protect our national security,” the president-elect continued. “The order ensures that there will be no liability for any company that helped prevent TikTok from going dark before my order.”

“Americans deserve to see our grand inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and discussions,” Trump said.

Sunday’s post did not explain how quickly the extension would take effect or how long it would last.
