Serhii Bohachuk volunteers to fight Sebastian Fundoran in March

Serhii Bohachuk has agreed to be his next challenger for WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in March. Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) had two options for his next fight rejected by the World Boxing Organization last week.

Initially, Fundora planned to defend against Errol Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), but the WBO chose not to allow the fight. Their reasoning is that Spence hasn’t fought in 1.5 years. He has never fought at 154 on a losing streak, and is not ranked in the WBO top 15.

Team Fundora wanted to use Joey Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs), but he wasn’t even ranked 15th, so he wasn’t a good opponent.

A dangerous challenge

Former WBC interim 154-lb champion Bohachuk is ranked #8 in the WBO, making him the perfect opponent for Fundora’s March 30th fight. The only problem is that Fundora management may not want to use Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KOs), because he is dangerous.

Although Fundora proved he could beat the slugger in Tim Tsyu last year, it’s a different story with Bohachuk. He’s not a single-shot guy the way Tsyu does. Artur Beterbiev throws a consistent heavy hand punch and is good at fighting on the inside. It can generate a lot of energy from the inside. Tsyu couldn’t do that.

If Team Fundora wants to drop down the WBO’s top 15 list of contenders, they may not be happy with Sebastian fighting someone like Charles Conwell or Xander Zayas. Those are two fights, as would be the case if he were to fight Bohachuk.

Fundora should take the fight to Bohachuk if he feels he’s ready for it because he’s free and willing to fight him. It’s half the battle.
